'URGE TO SPLURGE- an obsession with materialsm that is destroying communities, friendship and self-discipline'
SPEND! SPEND! SPEND! Yes, giving gifts is a joy. But the argue is that our obsession with materialism is destroying communities, friendship and self-discipline.
Thinking of doing Diwali shopping this afternoon? You'll need sharp elbows.
A new iPad or a new play station? Chocolates? Sweets? Crackers? New dresses (most importantly) or perhaps a child's iPhone, huh?
In our rush, to worship at the altar of self-indulgence, we have to lost sight not just of Diwali, but of the values of community.
Back in the seventies, it had been predicted that the desolation of our once-great industrial cities would mean the emergence of 'ruined communities' striped of their
dignity and will leave helplessly dependent on the idle fantasies of mass communism.

"Materialism leads to a decline. In civilization and human values."
The above statement holds much truth in this period of time. However, glimpses of where this statement has held good can be seen throughout history.
When one grows up into an adult, it can be seen that the whole world seems to be judging you by your net worth. People speak to one because he owns a dozen yachts, has millions of dollars of rupees in his bank account and had his own private turf in exotic place. So, the onus is on him to keep his bucks flowing in. This kind of stress usually results people trying to acquire wealth and other materialistic things through unscrupulous means.
One, to acquire all those materialistic things, get into his own world. He, then, has no connection with anyone else. One on,y wants to get all those things. And to do so, he degrades all the values of humanity. When all the people in this world practice this trend of just collections all those materialistic things. They get detached from humanity, moral values, society, community and in a sense they get into their own world, leaving this real world.
Materialism refers to the outside domain. However, spirituality is what we need to really focus on. Instead of separating our inner and outer self, we must reconcile both and act as one. One must enjoy life's pleasures; but not to go to the extent of becoming a materialistic machine.
A FAMOUS PHILOSOPHER LAO TZU ONCE SAID," THE JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP." SO IF ONE WANTS HUMANITY TO TAKE THE JOURNEYOF DEVELOPING IN TERMS OF VALUES AND CIVILITY, EACH PERSON MUST TAKE THE SINGLE AND EXTREMELY IMPORTANT STEP OF HONONG THE SOUL OR SPIRIT WHICH IS INHERENT IN HIMSELF OR HERSELF.
